Virginia is for Lovers

For what seems like decades the tourism slogan for Virginia was “Virginia is for Lovers.”

After yesterday, it is more like “Virginia is for Haters.” People came from all over to show their hate for their fellow Americans. In a disgusting show of hate that looked like the mob scene from a Frankenstein movie (minus pitchforks, plus guns), a group of citizens revealed that we have a long way to go before we are “One nation, under God, indivisible, with liberty and justice for ALL.”

I would bet they have saluted their flags and recited the Pledge of Allegiance, not pausing to listen to the words. If your fellow American who looks or believes differently than you wants the same conceptual things you do, how does that take away from you? If I, an old white guy, want liberty and justice, why shouldn’t you want it, or why shouldn’t your neighbor, regardless or color or creed, want it?  If we all get it, it takes nothing away from the other. It just fulfills the American ideal.

So, for  those who fear the American ideal of liberty and justice for all; let go of the fear.  We will all be better for it.  As 1960’s hippy-ish as it sounds, LOVE is the answer. And by the way, (hint, hint) your neighbor isn’t just the guy who lives next door.

Peace.
